Celia Cruz Immortalized on U.S. Quarter in Historic First for Afro-Latina Representation

The U.S. Mint recently launched a new coin honoring the legendary Cuban singer Celia Cruz, officially placing her image in circulation as part of the American Women Quarters Program™ for 2025. Known as the Queen of Salsa, Celia Cruz was celebrated for her powerful voice, vibrant performances, and distinctive cultural influence. Her inclusion in this program is a significant moment, marking the first time an Afro-Latina is represented in this prestigious initiative.

Recognizing Celia Cruz Among American Icons

Celia Cruz joins an elite group of five women recognized in the 2025 series of the American Women Quarters Program, which highlights the achievements and impact of influential women throughout U.S. history. Other honorees include Patsy Takemoto Mink, Dr. Mary Edwards Walker, Pauli Murray, and Zitkala-Ša. This initiative, led by the U.S. Mint, reflects the growing acknowledgment of diverse contributions to the nation's cultural fabric.

Ventris C. Gibson, Director of the U.S. Mint, emphasized that "all of the women honored have unique accomplishments that have significantly impacted the history of our nation." The tribute to Cruz is especially poignant given her lifelong role in spreading Latin music and culture worldwide.

A Cultural Pioneer’s Legacy

Born in Havana, Cuba, in 1925, Celia Cruz’s influence extends far beyond her legendary career. Over the decades, she became one of the most recognized and cherished figures in Latin music. Her signature catchphrase “¡Azúcar!” and vibrant performances cemented her legacy, earning her three GRAMMY®s and four Latin GRAMMY®s. Even posthumously, Cruz’s legacy has continued to inspire, with Rolling Stone® naming her one of the 200 greatest singers of all time and Mattel® immortalizing her as a Barbie® doll.

Omer Pardillo-Cid, the executor of Cruz’s estate, shared, "Celia received many accolades during her lifetime, but this honor from the U.S. Mint is truly remarkable. She would have been genuinely surprised and touched by this recognition."

A Tribute Beyond the Coin

In celebration of this recognition, Leon Medical Centers in South Florida, in collaboration with the Celia Cruz Estate, has taken the initiative to distribute the commemorative quarter in exclusive packaging. Individuals can register at CeliaCruzAtLeon.com for a chance to receive this unique memento, available for pick-up at LMC locations. Benjamin León, Jr., Chairman and Founder of Leon Medical Centers, expressed his pride in supporting the tribute, noting that Cruz’s story resonates deeply with the Cuban exile community in South Florida.

A Year of Celebration

The release of the quarter comes as part of a broader celebration of Celia Cruz’s 100th birthday. Earlier this year, a special commemorative album, Celia Cruz en Vivo: 100 Años de Azúcar was released, featuring previously unreleased live recordings. Produced by Loud And Live Studios and distributed by InnerCat, the album has quickly become a collector’s item, underscoring the enduring influence of Cruz’s music.
