Austin Millz has carved out a unique space for himself in the music industry, blending genres and breaking down boundaries. Known for his genre-defying dance beats, the Harlem native’s journey has been a mix of influences, creativity, and vision. With his latest releases and a focus on inclusivity, Austin continues to push the envelope, making music that transcends genres, cultures, and backgrounds. And now, after a successful 2024 residency at Wynn Nightlife, he's ready to bring his high-energy performances back to Arkadia Day Club at Fontainebleau.
Harlem Roots, LA Influence: Austin Millz’s Musical Evolution
Austin’s music is deeply rooted in Harlem, where he first found his footing in the scene. “Harlem is the bedrock of who I am as an individual,” he explains. But it was Los Angeles that smoothed out the edges of his sound, allowing him to explore a broader range of musical genres. “LA helped me transcend different genres, cultures, and countries, which is reflected in my music,” says Austin, describing how his sound has evolved since moving to the West Coast.
Austin’s musical growth and genre-blending style were fully realized in his 2023 EP, Breathwork. The collection, which includes tracks like “Inhale / Exhale,” “Freeway,” and “On and On,” fuses atmospheric house, buoyant pop vocals, and soulful bounce. “It’s the intersection between dance music, soul, and R&B,” he explains. With collaborations from artists like Estelle, Duckwrth, Aline Baraz, Destin Conrad, and Justine Skye, Breathwork brings together a diverse range of voices, and it's clear that inclusivity is central to Austin's vision for the future of dance music.
A Vision for Inclusivity: Austin’s Impact in the Dance Music Scene
As a Black, Puerto Rican artist in the dance music world, Austin is determined to be a figure of representation. “We’re not generally the faces of the genre,” he notes, but he’s making it his mission to bring more diversity to the forefront. Austin's live shows are a perfect reflection of his inclusive approach. “At my shows, I love seeing all types of melanin, colour, gender, sexuality – everything’s together. It’s a beautiful picture,” he says.
His music and performances are a celebration of unity, offering a space for people from all walks of life to come together and experience the power of music. “This is new age Black dance music,” Austin smiles. “But inclusive of everybody!”
Austin’s Latest Collaborations and Releases: Pushing Boundaries
Since the release of Breathwork, Austin has continued to make waves with his music. Last summer, he debuted “Church” featuring Tommy Genesis, which he gave fans a sneak peek of during his sold-out show at the Fonda Theater in Los Angeles. A month later, Austin released “Turbina,” a collaboration with reggaeton artist Farruko. The track fuses reggaeton beats with Austin’s signature electronic sound, blending two genres that share Puerto Rican roots.
Austin’s recent releases, including “Hot & Mysterious” with Kah-Lo and “Need I Say More” featuring Jozzy, showcase his ability to seamlessly weave his distinctive style into popular collaborations, further solidifying his place in the music scene.
