Miami-based organization Young Musicians Unite (YMU) has partnered with the globally renowned nonprofit Playing For Change Foundation to release a unique rendition of the iconic 80s hit “Everybody Wants to Rule the World” by Tears for Fears. Featuring over 100 musicians, educators, and students from around the world, this project highlights music’s extraordinary ability to bridge cultures and transcend borders.
The collaboration celebrates the unifying power of music, with participants from countries including Ghana, Rwanda, Panama, and Morocco contributing their distinct styles to the project. By honoring the original song while incorporating global influences, the track aims to spread a message of positivity, unity, and the transformative power of music.
Behind the Vision: Empowering Musicians and Connecting Communities
"This project has been a powerful reminder of why we do what we do," shared Zach Larmer, COO of YMU, who co-arranged and played bass on the track. "Our mission is not only to empower young musicians but also to bridge cultural divides through the universal language of music. Partnering with the Playing For Change Foundation on this reimagined classic is just the beginning of an impactful new initiative."
Mark Johnson, co-founder of Playing For Change, echoed this sentiment: "The magic of this project lies not just in the music but in the unity it represents. Students who had never met, separated by thousands of miles, created something cohesive and beautiful. It’s proof of the extraordinary power music has to connect us all.”
A Global Effort: Crafting a Unified Sound
The project began in Miami, with YMU's creative team—Zach Larmer, Jason Matthews, and Lucas Apostoleris—leading the arrangement efforts alongside YMU alumnus Cristian Acevedo, who created the drum and percussion arrangements. The track then traveled to musicians across multiple continents, with each group encouraged to add their unique creative flair.
From vibrant percussion rhythms in Ghana to melodic contributions from Morocco and Rwanda, the final track showcases a seamless fusion of styles. Legendary percussionist Sammy Figueroa, who has worked with artists like Miles Davis, Quincy Jones, and Madonna, also lent his talents to the project, further enriching its sound.
A Celebration of Unity Through Music
The official music video, now streaming on Playing For Change’s YouTube channel, captures the global spirit of the collaboration. With participants of all ages and backgrounds coming together to perform, the project serves as a testament to the unifying and transformative power of music.
