Mercedes-AMG PETRONAS F1 Achieves 98% Biofuel Coverage in 2024 European Season

Working alongside its Title and Technical Partner PETRONAS and logistics partners, Mercedes-AMG PETRONAS set an ambitious goal to increase biofuel use during the nine European races. This effort included powering the team’s freight logistics and motorhome with sustainable fuels, a challenge given the complexities of supply chain management across Europe.

From Pilot to Progress

Since piloting biofuel use in 2022, the team has significantly expanded its coverage, increasing from 74% biofuel use during the 2023 European season to 98% in 2024. This achievement demonstrates the team's ongoing commitment to sustainability and serves as a proof of concept for reducing the environmental impact of motorsport logistics.

PETRONAS’s Critical Role

The contribution of PETRONAS has been essential to this success. By sourcing and delivering HVO100 biofuel across Europe, PETRONAS’s expertise in fuel logistics has been crucial in powering not only race operations but also marketing trucks responsible for transporting the team’s motorhome. Their partnership has been a driving force in helping the team make meaningful strides in sustainable fuels.

A Vision for the Future

Team Principal and CEO Toto Wolff emphasized the importance of this milestone: "Powering our European season on biofuel is a first for our team and sport, and I hope our achievements, with the invaluable support of PETRONAS, will inspire others to follow. Our next challenge is to expand the use of sustainable fuels beyond Europe and prepare for fully sustainable fuel to power the 2026 cars."

Commitment to Continued Progress

Alice Ashpitel, Head of Sustainability for Mercedes-AMG PETRONAS, echoed the team’s dedication to sustainability, stating, "Optimizing our logistics operations and achieving almost total biofuel coverage reflects our team’s significant sustainability efforts. It's inspiring to see the tangible reduction of our impact both at the track and on the road."

As Formula 1 prepares to introduce a fully sustainable central power solution for European races in 2025, the Mercedes-AMG PETRONAS F1 Team continues to lead the charge in sustainability and is already looking to extend its biofuel use to flyaway races next season.
